October 3, 2004 -- Lisa Frank Yarn Works

You know, I just realized that if Lisa Frank came into being in 1979, then the craft kit Karen had from one of mom's friends for xmas sometime in our youth was most likely an early version of the "Yarn Works" kit:

I remember we both played with the loopers and the square loom, but Karen had trouble and was probably too young for the green plastic knitting needles.  She handled the crochet hook ok enough to make long chains but I can't recall her ever doing more than that. She also hogged the knitting mushroom because she liked that it was less pegs than the round knitting loom one so she made me use that one. (It was her toy -- she got to make the rules when we played with it.)

I remember some neon orange yarn and knitting some holey looking thing and how my tension was soooo tight the plastic knitting needles were permanently bent. The neon yellow and neon green yarn were equally scary.

I do remember both of us being annoyed that the little toys were made of too-soft plastic. It would have been sturdier in wood or aluminum or something.

Hearthsong's textile/arts/crafts kits are much better as far as colors.

My biggest question is why don't they make trial kits like this for adults? That would be the coolest gift basket-type thing anyone could give me for Xmas. Forget the bath salt/bubble bath type gift baskets!
