October 4, 2004 -- "Merry and Bright" -- first pieced afghan

Another one out of the Leisure Arts' Quick and Cozy Afghans book.  This one was called "Merry and Bright" because in the book it is done in Christmas colors. I always thought it was ugly and the variegated yarn made it hard to see the clusters.

Later I was looking for something to use up some scrap worsted yarn with and decided to try this one despite the ugly book photo because it was simple -- strips rather than blocks = less pieces to make.

The strips also worked upwards (few stiches, but frequent turning of work) rather than horizontal. (less turning of work but loooong stitches across). This meant I could always stop at the end of a row and not smack in the middle when I got tired. I always like the vertical "mile" patterns rather than the horizontal!

My first attempt:

Made some mistakes with the scallop edges lot laying flat and in assembly... in the detail you see I have one strip going in one direction and the next the clusters are going the other way. Not terribly noticeable, but still... something to watch out for.

I thought it was going to be an ugly blanket but the colors I was trying to use up ended up working together pretty decently so I ended up liking the colors after all. I really liked how it worked up though so much later I did the same pattern in baby sport with a slightly smaller hook:

This time I was more careful about the scalloped edges and they lay nicely flat.

I'd def. do this one again.
