October 11, 2004 --Bernat Crochet Baby Cardigan

So I was working on this baby sweater pattern from Bernat called the "Crochet Baby Cardigan" in the 12 mos. size and I was having trouble sizing the sleeves.

The pattern says do X rows and then continue the sleeves to measure 6.5 inches. Well, I do X rows and the sleeves are already at 7.5 inches so what do I do?! How much do I continue? Or do I unravel? There's no handy baby around here to fit this on.

That's what I get for not going with the suggested hook nor the suggested yarn. They say to use a "K" with Bernat baby boucle yarn but I am tired of the pastels so I'm doing it in an "I" hook with Bernat denim style yarn instead. After doing a swatch in "K" I moved down to "I" because that fit the gauge a bit better.

I found this size chart online for kid sweaters:

  • Size 0-3 months (fits an infant up to 12 lbs.):  width 10 inches; length 11.25 inches; sleeve 7.75 inches
  • Size 4-7 months (fits an infant 12-17 lbs.):  width 11 inches; length 12.5 inches; sleeve 9 inches
  • Size 8-12 months (fits an infant 17-22 lbs.):  width 12 inches; length 14 inches; sleeve 10.5 inches
  • Toddler size 2: width 13 inches; length 15.5 inches; sleeve 12.5 inches
  • Toddler size 4: width 14 inches; length 17 inches; sleeve 13.75 inches
  • Toddler size 6: width 15 inches; length 18.5 inches; sleeve 16.25 inches

That helps more because I see my chest is 12 inches and my length is almost 14 inches, so logically I should just go with the 10.5 inch sleeves and ignore what the pattern says for that part. Besides, sleeves can be rolled up. So there.

I'm done! Yay! Well, as done as this gets for right now. Not counting the little bit that is left to do it took about 3 hrs.  I'll post a better picture later... night pictures come out too gloomy:

I got the sleeves done to 10.5 inches and fastened off.  Then I did the hoodie and the trim on the edges.  It called for one row of sc but since there's a zipper going in there somewhere I did 2 rows and left the ball of yarn attached in case I want to go 3 rows after I consult with Mom about what zipper to get and study some tips on how to stick it in. </a>Once the zipper is in and the edging covers it, then I can fasten off and use the last of the yarn to sew in the sleeves.

The true test will be fitting this on one the kids but eyeballing it, the proportions look about right.  I'm glad I found that size chart! Overall the pattern was pretty easy except that confusing bit about sleeve length.
