November
22, 2003 -- Fair Isle scarf and
others I'm having one
of those "pregnant with a short attention span" kind of days. I wanted
to read, then I didn't want to read. I wanted to watch TV, and then I didn't want
to watch TV. I wanted to crochet one thing, and then I wanted to do something
else. First I did 4 more
rows on the "Fair Isle" afghan. Decided I didn't want to look at gray
and red yarn any more. Then
I decided to start the "Keepsake" afghan pattern in purple, and this
time actually try to fit the gauge. (I had to go to an I hook instead of the K
the book suggests.) I got this far before I got tired of looking at purple yarn:
Next
I started messing about on graph paper trying to make up a fair isle scarf pattern
-- an idea I had last month but hadn't gotten around to actually trying out. I
hadn't really wanted to start doing crochet fair isle with that big blanket pattern
because I wanted to start with a smaller project to practice first.
I quickly discovered that while there are a lot of knitting fair isle patterns
online, there didn't seem to be any crochet ones. I'd thought about making
one up and chose this knit scarf to base it on but after a screwy first draft
I gave up and decided to just bite the bullet and plunge into the afghan come
what may. Today
I decided to give plotting another try. Here's
what part of the graph looked like:
I
started working it up in dark blue and light blue yarn. Here's a detail that would
match that chunk of the graph -- three X's:
I
was shooting for a 12 inch width and 6 "X's" separated by straight lines
in the fair isle pattern. Doing it with an I hook seemed to get me closest to
what I wanted -- it's 12.5 inches across:
In
retrospect, I should have gone with 5 X's and 6 | 's |
X | X | X | X | X | rather
than 6 X's and 5 |'s X
and then the I hook probably would have given me 12 inches on the nose , but live
and learn. I'm
only going to have the fair isle trim on the ends. The bulk of the scarf is just
going to be SC's. So even
thouh git's not exactly like
the pattern that inspired me, it's similar. <<
