March 8, 2004 -- Baby Sling

Hadn't made anything craft-wise since mid January because I got near the end of pregnancy and had Julia on 1/31 by C-sect. We spent the month of February adjusting to a newborn in the house. It's been very sweet. But as I recover and get more enregy I started thinking of things I can make for baby.

I decided to try making P aul a tube sling as the second project I've tried to sew by myself. He'd commented on sore arms and legs after waltzing around with her so I was hoping a sling would help distribute her weight a bit better. The resulting sling is a bit crude yet, but I'm pretty pleased with myself anyway. I didn't once snarl my thread, the sling seems sturdy, I figured out a dart, and my long seams are definitely straighter. Now I just have to work on getting consistant 1/4" seam allowances and making more discreet seams on the inside of the work. The sling looks ok on the outside but on the insides where all the hem lines show it's a bit amateurish.

Not that Paul or Julia cared about the hems. They danced around the living room anyhow.

Paul's informed me that Julia seems to like Lincoln by They Might be Giants the best. She didn't seem too excited by The Beatles. I want to know how he figured all that out. To me she just looked surprised and a bit worried about this new sling thing.

She couldn'thave been too worried though because she promptly fell asleep in it. I'm debating making my sling with a twist so it's more like a mobius strip when sewn shut than a ring or tube because I think the twist would sit better on my shoulder. I'll have to think about it... I'm also thinking about trying these directions instead.
