Sound Lab Mini-Synth
Otherwise know as Julia's "My First Synthesizer®".
This is the Sound Lab Mini-Synth designed by Ray Wilson. It is a complete two oscillator mono-synth all on a single PCB. A lot of versitility in such a small package. For those who don't feel like etching their own borards, he has professionally fabricated ones for sale at a good price.
When building it, I made use of scrap lumber and aluminum left over from other projects. Below is the panel layout that I used to fit within the materials on hand. For those interested, I have provided FIG, PDF and PNG formats.
It's construction was quite easy and something that I would recommend to someone just starting out in synth DIY. The only problems that I experienced were due to faulty components. There are a lot of flying wires, so I would recommend using lots of cable ties. I'm not ususally very tidy with wiring panels as the pictures below attest to.
