Got my new
shoes this afternoon. Getting ready to do my walk so I'll report on how they feel
afterwards. They are New Balance 878's,
with the Sof Sole Athletes Plus insoles, in
a size 10B. It made me laugh that I'm wearing size 10 shoes, but the reviews were
right in that this model is running small in size. What's up with that?
I hope the reviewer who said that with insoles the back heel rub thing is not
true because there were a lot of people who complained about that! We shall see
how they do for me...

Training Walk 16
- Focus: go
long for 1:15 min
- Duration:1:05 min
- Where: Neighborhood with Paul
- Distance:
3.1 miles?
- Ave. Speed: 2.8 miles?
- Calories: 559?
Paul
is convinced this pedometer is calibrated wonky because he swears we walked more
than 3.1 miles and we had a 15 min per mile walking pace through the first chunk.
So tomorrow we have to calibrate it once and for all. I am inclined to agree,
because we did the small loop we do when we bike and the bikes measure it out
to 4 miles, so how can a mile get lost? I can see a discreapancy of a few yards,
but a whole mile? Where did it go?! Time wise, we hit the first marker four minutes
faster than I normally hit it on my own so I KNOW he was pacing us faster than
I do by myself. I'll figure this out eventually...
My new shoes are ok so
far, the only complaint is that the tongue of the right shoe keeps veering off
to one side. I must not have laced it well. My calves were a bit tight for the
first 10-15 minutes and then loosened up, so I need to warm up for 20 minutes
before I do anything harder. I also had that same hand start to swell, but this
time I held my hands over my head every time it felt funky and it was fine. Must
be a circulation thing?
Overall it was a nice walk -- Paul's a great pacer
and amusing companion, so the time flew by. No ankle problems. Yay.

Training Walk 15
- Focus: Intervals for 60 minutes
- Duration:
40 minutes
- Where: treadmill at gym
- Rate: 5
Ugh. I'm
still gimpy. Better, but still gimpy. The intervals were killing me today. I was
at 3.5 MPH but then tapered it down to 3.0 because it was hurting my calves.
I found my wooden massager things. One has two arches connected by several rows
of dowels and the dowels have textured wooden beads on them. You set it on the
floor and rub your feet on it. That's been helping a lot there. The other is a
wooden handle with rollers. That's helping on my calves.
Paul and I compromised
on the hike -- we'll go to the woods some other weekend. This weekend we'll walk
to the old section of base with buckets and shovels and get the walk taken care
of that way, plus dig up some plants around the abandoned apartments for our flowerbeds.
It's about 6 miles round trip on the bikes, so I figure that will take care of
the 1:15 min walk for Saturday. Meanwhile, ice, ice, ice.

Training Walk 14
- Focus: Speed
for 30 min
- Duration: ??
- Locale: Neighborhood
- Miles: ??
I
went walking with Paul around the neighborhood last night and he wore the pedometer
and promptly broke it. Well, not broke it, but made it spazz out so I have no
details now to report. This morning I had to dig out the instructions and reset
everything after taking out the battery and putting it back in because that was
the only thing I could think of doing that would clear it ALL and give me a fresh
start.

Got the 2nd NF budget sheet. It's not correct because I happen
to know of friends who've turned in things but didn't make this report sheet.
I wonder what the turnaround time is anyway?! Now I am annoyed, because I
still haven't posted the form to the server. I will go to gym tonight and as soon
as I get back I WILL do that!
I sleep like a log with this training stuff
happening. 10 PM rolls around and I'm hobbling around all sleepy. Stuff at home
doesn't get done. Blah.

Budget sheet? I would love to receive a budget
sheet .. showing that someone has made a donation in my name. Unfortunately,
I don't think I've received any yet, so I'm probably not going to get one until
June..
The weather is pretty crappy, so I'm glad that I'm replacing my sneakers
this weekend -- I'm expecting them to get pretty soaked tonight.

training walk number 14
Guest Walking Buddy: K
Locale: complex
loop
Minutes: 30
Mileage: 1.5
Total mileage: 29.1 Loop splits:
10:31, 9:58, 9:17
Today's workout called for thirty minutes, or three laps,
with a ten minute warm up, fifteen minutes of speed work, and a five minute cool
down. So in theory, the first split should have been longest, the second should
have been shortest, and the third split should have been in the middle somewhere.
You'll notice that it's not quite like that. Why? Because of today's lesson:
Today's lesson: YOU COULD BE HALF A MILE FROM THE PORT-O-LOO WHEN NATURE RINGS
YOU ON THE PHONE.
The first lap went as planned, a nice warmup. Halfway around
the second lap Nature came calling, so I slowed down a bit until we got back to
my apartment. To make up for the slower second lap, I did a speed third lap.
It will be so nice when my normal walking time is the speed for that third lap!
I wonder how long it will take..

ARGH! Real life is getting
in my way! So much to do! The shoe problem... we have to go buy me shoes this
weekend. The orths are great, but make my 877's too tight since the orths are
quite thick. There are no more 877's available except through onlineshoes.com.
Which is nuts because they want almost $90 for the 877's, which are last years
model! I can get the 878's, the current model, for less than that! So I
have to bump up to the 878's and hope that they are as good a shoe as the 877
was for me. At least I'll be buying them in person and get to try the orth/sock/shoe
thing all together as a unit. Man, once I get this shoe thing down I am NOT going
to switch brands at ALL!
Meanwhile my calves are less achy but the balls of
my feet are still tender. I asked Paul if he wanted to go hiking in the arboretum
this Saturday, and he said ok so that will take care of my missing 60 min walk
and the 1 hr 15 min walk that is scheduled. Hikes through there usually take us
2-4 hours depending on the route we take.

Today I have to do the 30 min of speed work or catch up and do the 60 min walk
I missed and do the 30 min tomorrow. This morning I woke up form a weird dream
at 6:00 AM and then got up because we'd forgotten to put out the trash. It was
a breezy 70 deg out. So if I want to do short walks in the morning I can. Today
is supposed to be a high of 82 F, but I doubt it because the highs have all been
in the 80's and in real life they've been in the 90's! I think when we write that
article about training in hot weather, we should include that heat index chart.
I've been rethinking my shoes. Mostly the insoles. I still think the shoes
are about perfect, but the insoles is the only thing I've changed lately. And
the socks. So one or the other or both must not be right, because I keep getting
these calf complaints and toe rub. Soreness is one thing, chronic pain is another.
I looked up an article
about insole reviews, and one about lower
leg issues.
I've also been poking around looking for socks:
And
that's not even all the on-;line sports catalogs out there! Isn't is SICK?!
I'm
thinking Coolmax Thorlos for right now. Then if I don't like those move on.

training walk number 13 .. welcome to Week 4!
Guest Walking Buddies: Joe, Matt, Amy, and DMC
Locale: Rye, NH, at Odiorne State Park
Minutes: 54
Mileage: 2.5
Total
mileage: 27.6 Lesson number one: Don't bring Joe, Matt, and Dave anywhere near
someplace they can poke their noses into when you're trying to do a training walk.
Lesson number two: Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen.
Other than that -- it was
a pretty decent walk. We had good weather, and got to see some interesting sights
-- like the periwinkles hanging out around an intertidal pool .. an old WWII observation
bunker, long since desecrated by spray paint and beer cans .. and the fog over
the ocean.
But it was hard to keep pace and stay with the group, because they
were stopping every five seconds. Grr.
training walk number 12 .. end
of Week 3!
Guest Walking Buddies: K, Melanie of James
and Melanie
Locale: Busch 200 race at New Hampshire International Speedway
Minutes: unknown.. did a lot of walking over the course of the day.
Mileage:
3.0
Total mileage: 25.2 I killed off some lung and nerve cells during this
day's walking, but I absolutely loved it. The sound of 45 finely (and some not-so-finely)
tuned automotive powerhouses as they get ready to start their race. The stench
of their various fuels and liquids as they kee-rash into the side of the track
(and each other). Mmmm. Racin'.
I'm not quite a redneck wannabe, but day-um,
that was quite an experience.

Creaky! I'm feeling
creaky! More specifically, I am feeling soreness in my upper legs when I walk.
I took a bath last night but it didn't seem to do much to ease those aches.
It's week 4.. guess the honeymoon's over. But I'm still on program.. no doubt
about that.

Why are THEY sore?! Adrith's right. The honeymoon is over. Sigh.

Training walk 12
It was supposed to be an hour walk, but instead
we went to do the Mayfaire 5k in Lakeland. I am glad we got there early! We had
pre-registered, and we got out number and bags, and hung out until the race began.
The first mile we did at 15 min, the second mile we did at 15 min, 28 sec, and
the last 1.1 miles we finished in 18 or 19 min? The hills at the end just about
killed me! Total time was 49:38. I was shooting for 45 min. Not too bad! Yay!
This is what I learned:
- Get a CamelBak and bring my own water. All
the water stations were out of water by the time we got to them.
- Wear
wicking clothes and skip the panties -- I got chafed and it was SUPER hot even
though the race was around sunset.
- My bum ankle needs more work, because
it poops out fast!
Paul's a good pacer because he's so tall, and
he's got a good temperament. Very encouraging. Def. gotta try another 5k. Today
we took my parents out biking for Mother's Day so I don't know if I'm doing Training
Walk 13 tonight or tomorrow. Most likley make it up later -- I'm sore.
