June 10, 2000 High 80's
today, but with major breeze, so it's not feeling as evil as it had been this
week. I've lost track of all walk stats so I stink. I am not even sure what number
walk this is. All I know is today is 2 hrs and tomorrow is 20 min. I got a new
log book though -- the companion to The Courage to Start. Hopefully I can
keep all my notes there and not on little scraps of paper I lose about my desk!
Paul's going to walk with me today in the evening and we are going to walk
out to the old apartments and back. Before we go though, we are going to calibrate
this pedometer once and for all! While he does yard stuff I have to clean up the
kitchen. It's time to start over, clean up, and pull me out of the slump I've
been in! posted by Astrophe 3:32 PM
A great post, and it was lost to the Blogger god who doesn't
want me posting from home. GRR!! Suffice to say, Thursday's walk (#27) was done
on Friday.. today's walk (#28) is going to get done tomorrow, and tomorrow's walk
(#29) will have to wait until Monday. Then MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, I can be on schedule
for a while! Joe's second job is contributing in small part to this chaos --
but that ends tonight, so things might even up a little bit now that that will
be over with. At any rate, we have a lot of discussing to do tonight or tomorrow..
maybe over that 2-hr walk. training walk 27 -- Friday (scheduled for
Thursday) Guest Walking Buddy: K Locale: the Kitty Tour Minutes:
54 Mileage: 2.5 Total mileage: 59.0 I started with a lap timed over
ten minutes. Lap 2 was slightly under 10 minutes, because I had jogged briefly.
But for the three laps after that, positive splits -- the fifth lap had a time
well over 11 minutes. By the end of lap 5, I just didn't have anything left to
go on. My legs hurt, my feet hurt, and I wanted to be sick to my stomach. Yes,
sports fans, I bonked. And I'm ashamed to admit it. posted

Training Walk 28 - Focus: Endurance, walk for 2 hours
- Time:
not quite 2 hrs
- Distance: something like 5? miles
- Rating: 4ish
-- hard but not horrid.
It's a good thing Adrith counts the walks
better than I do. Otheriwse I wouldn't know how to number mine! Paul came
with me and we took the tape measure and chalk and marked off 30 yards to calibrate
my pedometer. That took about 10 minutes to figure out and we still did it wrong.
At the end of the long walk the pedometer gave me a stride of ten inches and showed
the whole walk as two miles. Which is a bald faced lie, because we walked
our usual six mile bike route! The only parts of the bike route we skipped were
the stretches of sand we like to do on the bikes and those are not even 200 yards
long, much less the "missing" four miles. We were out for nearly 2 hrs,
walking at a decent pace, not creeping along at one mile per hour. Paul even jogged
some of it for goodness sake! So we guesstimated at five-ish miles. That's the
one good thing about the gym -- more accurate distances. I like the pedometer
functions, but I swear once I get it calibrated right I am going to memorize that
number. I don't want to have to calibrate it again! Talked to our boss
Larry for a sec when he called for Paul for work stuff. He's planning on running
the Disney half-marathon with his brother so we chatted about our expectations.
He told me last year he finished in 2.5 hrs, and this year he wants to try to
finish in 2:10. I figure it will take me over 3 hrs to walk 13 miles, but we shall
see what happens when I get there. I'll have a better idea once I do the Cady
Way Trail later this month. It it takes me more than 4 hrs, I know I'm in trouble!
The only thing I am thankful for is that there is still 6 1/2 months left to train
in, and if we aren't doing well enough for the full marathon the NF people will
move us to the half-marathon once the real NF training starts. The bottoms
of my feet are getting thicker soles. This is a good thing. Today I wore the coolmax
Target socks again and they rubbed my feet funny. They are the same socks I wore
to my 5K and then started bothering me then too -- they just aren't any good for
distances over a mile or so. I'm retiring them to biking socks. Solved
my calf problem -- ten minutes into the walk we came up on a fence and I stopped
the timer and just stretched my calves for a good long while. Ten minutes after
that we got to a telephone pole and I stretched out my calves again. Didn't bother
me a bit the rest of the time. So I am eaither getting stronger calves or I am
getting to know how to best stretch them so they don't bug me! Maybe both!

9, 2000 Back, worn out from grad. How can sitting still
for several hours tire a person so? 2 hrs down, 2 hrs at grad, 2 hr over a long
lunch, 2 hrs back. I've never been so sick of sitting! Allergies on rampage,
had to borrow drugs from my SIL. They worked really nicely, I will have to ask
her what brand they were. She said it was another brand of "benadryl" but not
the actual thing. More fires out here, smoke is everywhere, making me nuts!

a family function, so the blogging will be light today.. I'd just like to mention
she sent me a really kick-ass workout tape. The appropriate name: 4.0 MPH.

June 7, 2000 training walk 26 Locale: the
Kitty Tour Minutes: 46 Mileage: 2.5 Total mileage: 56.5 Scheduled
to be a 45-minute speedwork walk. When I got home from the grocery store yesterday
evening, it was still raining, and the wind had picked up to a brisk pace. I stopped
to think about it for a minute; either I could drive to the gym, using up gas
in the car and time on the road, or I could dress more warmly, wear a hat, and
get some experience walking in the rain. I elected to do #2. So off I went
in my windpants, windjacket, and a long-sleeved Lock Monsters t-shirt (HOCKEYHOCKEYHOCKEY!),
my old sneaks, my Origins hat, and my walkman. Which started to run out of
energy almost immediately. I listened to it as long as I could, and concentrated
on having the best form possible with the wind in my face and no support in my
shoes. And I turned in split times of 9:21.04, 9:34.64, 9:28.17, 9:13.41, and
8:55.83. I had to jog to make sure that that last split time came in under
the 4th split time, but I did it. I had enough energy left in my legs to do that,
which I consider very good.

You *have* to see my horoscope for today: Taurus: Look for new avenues to extend
your influence. You combine a conservative approach with great sincerity and high
enthusiasm, and that combination is a winner. If you are motivated to raise funds
not only for yourself but also for a project that will benefit humankind, you'll
have the angels on your side to speed things along. You could have a powerful
influence on partners in all dealings with real estate, property, or the conditions
of your home. What you say could have a potent effect on many people. Here,
angels, angels.. I got some angel treats right here... posted

Grr....decisions! Got wind of a 5K out at Epcot on June 24th from trackshack.com
and I don't know whether or not to do it. One it's mega hot! It's summer! Two,
how many chances am I going to get to try out at least part of the course at Disney?
Three who the heck wants to get up that early?! We'd have to be there befire 4
AM. Yarrrrrgh. I have to sleep on it. Even if I don't do it though, at least
I have a smorgasboard of FL 5K's to pick form now! Including a Disney 10K in October
which sounds a lot more doable. Hrm. posted by Astrophe

Well, I'm now up over two marathons in distance. And the first one took me about
as long as the second. But this week is where we start getting up over two hours
in weekend walk duration.. so that will automagically increase mileage. It will
get better! And I was reminded that this isn't the official NF Marathon Team
training.. in effect, I'm training to be in training. I should be able to manage
to get another ten or twenty pounds off before we start the official training
at the end of August.. which should also help increase my speed. BUT, when
I was walking yesterday, I just couldn't manage to keep going past that fifty
minutes. My back started screaming, my feet started screaming, and I couldn't
have walked another fifty feet without taking a sit-down break. I thought and
thought and thought about why that could be.. and then I realized that I'm not
exactly feeding myself properly. I probably ran out of gas! So it's back to
the food journaling I go.. posted by Adrith Bicchieri 9:31
AM June 4, 2000 This
morning I went on a hunt for the best web-weather for me to print out every three
days or so, to keep tabs on the weather conditions. I visited CNN's
website, and checked their weather page to see the layout and so forth. They
provided information for four days, which was good.. but they didn't give much
information other than the highs and lows and the condition .. no probabilities.
Grr. So I trotted off to those in the know, the almighty Weather
Channel website, and took a look at the forecast there. HMMM, info for seven
days! Great! I hit the print button, and was dismayed as I watched ten pages of
random drivel, along with my forecast, spool in the printer. I canceled that print
job pretty quick and thought "There has to be a better way..." I went to my
old standby, the fine folks at Weather
Underground. I pulled up the Dover forecast. Info for five days.. not too
shabby. I again hit print, and the moment after the last of six pages of crap
spooled onto the printer, I saw the "Print this page!" link. I canceled the print
job AGAIN, and clicked. There, in all its glory, the Dover weather conditions
and forecast, with only one ad at the top. I was in heaven. I printed. And two
pages later, I've got a printed forecast that I can feel good about not destroying
the environment with. Now let's dish about said forecast, shall we? Tuesday:
chance of rain! Thursday: chance of rain! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

now I am cranky. Adrith got Walking magazine's latest issue and informed me that
the Active.com copy of the schedule skipped a day or two and which makes their
copy of it on-line all screwy. Which means we need to switch to the magazine version
ASAP! So now I am bound to miss a day in the catch up process. Grr. At least
it's been caught early on, only in week 6! posted by Astrophe
