At this exact
moment, the heat index is higher here in NH than it is in FL. Ugggh!
(Incidentally,
the heat index here is at 93°, which is right in the "Extreme Caution" zone
of the heat index chart. I guess I'll be going out a little later.. definitely
not right now.)

Just got back from my folks for early Father's
Day. It's super hot again. Ugh. I plan on taking a nap and seeing if it gets better
as the sun sets. I don't understand why the gym closes EARLY on weekends when
more people have more time to be going there than during the week. Yeesh! I might
swap the two days -- do the shorter 60 min today and then the 90 min tomorrow.
Do have some good news -- got a progress report sheet and I'm almost at halfway!
$475! Yeah! I'm eager to get that $1000 out of the way so I can jump into helping
Adrith with hers. I want to meet her, I want to race, I want to DO this!
I
also want to see Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island on the Cartoon Network tonight.
I'm psyched!

Guess what? I didn't
go walking last night. But I DID go and purchase the book "Fitness Walking for
Dummies", and spent the evening reading. The particular sections I focused on
last night: stretching and fitness walking.
And I'll go out walking tonight.
Making this week three days on, one day off, three days on. Not so bad.

Oh, god! The
course map is
up on the Disney site.

I saw that course map, and as some of the Disney
Deads commented, it doesn't look much different than last year. But it DOES
bring the reality of this marathon home, doesn't it?
On a related topic, I
think I've decided on a water hydration system. I'm going to go with the Blackburn
Creekflow HydraPak. It's not as expensive in cycling shops up here as the CamelBak
products; their water saks have a great opening for easy cleaning; and I think
I can afford to pick one up this weekend. Neato burrito.

training walk 30 - Wednesday (scheduled for Tuesday)
Guest Walking
Buddy: Astrophe's new tape! Wahoo!
Locale: Planet Fitness
Minutes: 45
Mileage: ~2
Total Mileage: 66.7 Darn blogger lost my post again.. good
workout, but I think I might be having an issue with my ankle. Gosh, I hope not!
Because if I do tomorrow night's walk on time tomorrow, I'll be all caught up
with training..
Good night!

Ow. Ow. Ow..
training walk 29 - Tuesday (scheduled for Sunday)
Guest Walking Buddy:
Joe
Locale: the Kitty Tour
Minutes: 21
Mileage: 1.0
Total mileage:
64.7 I'm a little disappointed that it took 21 minutes to do two laps of the
Kitty Tour. But my body must have needed it after Monday night's walk, because
that's as fast as I could go. And when I got into bed last night and tried some
basic leg lifts, my left leg refused to lift. When I demanded its participation,
it rewarded me with muscle pain.
This morning my leg seems fine (though the
side-to-side movement feels a little tight still). You can bet I'm going to do
quite a bit of stretching tonight.
I'm worried that I'm going to get stuck
at the 21-minute mile. I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to finish the
marathon and that I may not even have it in me to finish the half.
What I need
to do now that our home schedule is a little more sane is concentrate on getting
all the carbs and protein in. Get back to Points-counting and food group-watching
and make sure I'm getting what I need to keep going.
Now that I'm basically
back on track with training (just one day off), I'm not going to let me feel as
though my work is wasted on a 21-minute mile. Back on track with walking. Back
on track with eating. Back on track with water.
I CAN DO THIS!

Training Walk 30? (Tues)
- Focus: Speed for 45 min
- Where: Gym, cross trainer
- Duration:
45 min
- Distance: 4 miles
- Rank: 3-4?
It was a good
workout, although I wore a cotton shirt and the sweat made it stick to my body.
Ugh. I did take my allergy meds, so even though there was smoke around and the
gym was stuffy, I did ok with breathing. Elbow injury is fine -- had no problem
with the arm moves on the cross trainer. I hit 5K in 36 minutes, which is waaaay
better than my real race time. Of course, it's easier in a controlled environment
like a gym, but hopefully the next time I do another race I will still see an
improvement. My left foot's toes kind of fell asleep for a bit during the session.
I wore Thorlos. and I think the extra sock material crowded the toe box in that
shoe. My left foot is the bigger foot -- the right foot had no problems.

Reading The Courage to Start again:
"Successful 'adult-onset' athletes are made, not born. To those of us who simply
want to run, the value of genetics is highly overrated. Running doesn't require
an extraordinary combination of muscle and bone. It requires only the desire to
move our bodies and the wisdom to accept the difference between our will and our
won't.
Running, like living, is alternately easy and hard, good and bad, exciting
and boring. It is made up of long periods of dreadful sameness interrupted by
brief moments of pure exhilaration. The big difference between running and life
is that runners choose their moments of exhilaration."
I hope I get to an easy
week here somewhere, because the last two weeks have been harder. I'm thinking
that when I add in the two 45-minute easy walks, that should give me at least
one good week, because if nothing else the additional activity should kickstart
my weight loss again..

I'm cooking in my house
and I can't turn the AC up any higher because we got the first summer utility
bill and it was $150! Yaaaaaaaah!!!! Too bad heat doesn't make you lose weight
like cold does! Foo!

John Bingham writes in The Courage to Start:
"Once you've overcome the momentum of your own inactivity, the improvements are
much more incremental and there are ups and downs. You begin to have good days
and bad days. In time you come to accept these fluctuations as natural."
Ugh,
this is natural?
I left the office for a little bit to get something to drink
from the Memorial Union Building. When I stepped outside, I felt absolutely horrid.
It was chilly out, I had been sitting on my spreading arse all day, and I hadn't
really shaken that feeling of fatigue I'd woken up with.
When I exited the
MUB after purchasing my snack, I stopped to think, really think. It was a grey
day, the kind I love best. The breeze was blowing and the feeling of air moving
around my face felt really good. And for a snack, I'd purchased a large diet cola
and a bag of baked crisps.
I could have purchased a large regular cola and
a big fat brownie. But I got a diet soda and baked crisps.
I started to feel
good again. And I started to believe that tonight's 2-hour walk was going to be
good.
I'll let you know if it really is..

training walk 28
- Monday (scheduled for Saturday)
Guest Walking Buddy: Joe
Locale:
Hampton/Rye, NH, coastline
Minutes: 1 hour 40
Mileage: 4.7
Total mileage:
63.7 Grrrr.
The mood was great. The weather was great. The conversation
was great.
But Joe got tired, and I got a side stitch after eating my PowerBar
(over the space of ten minutes, natch!).. and we were much, much slower than I
was hoping for in the previous hopeful entry. We couldn't even seem to maintain
that 20:00 pace I was hoping to see.
But it's hard to walk at a good clip when
what you're doing more closely resembles waddling than walking.
At least I
have good news to report in the chafing department; I wore the windpants again,
and again, I have no chafing problems. The one good thing out of today's walk..
but at least I did it. Now onto Sunday's walk tomorrow..

Adrith e-mails me to tell me she spotted something in the marathon article
I probably wouldn't have spotted myself until much later because I haven't had
the time to sit down and really READ that issue. Apart from the training schedule,
we have to be walking 45 min two extra days as easy walks. Well, dammit!
I'm not doing them Monday! That's the worst day at the gym. I suppose Wed. and
Fri. will be my two extra days. Next weeekend for the the long walks we have a
1 and a half hour session and then a one hour session. Weekend after that is the
big, long 3 hr followed by a 20 min. Oy.
