Not much to report here.. I haven't been walking much this week. I did, however, make up a six month calendar that goes from 2 July to 13 January -- it covers two sides of a sheet of poster board, lists all of the UNH holidays and important dates in the academic year (like when finals start and end), and has -- get this -- 127 training walks and 18 cross-training sessions.

Kee-ripes!

I also bagged an excellent bargain last night instead of going to the gym: a thin cotton T-shirt with daisies, a new pair of grey bike shorts, an Everlast sport bra, and a bottle of water all for under $24. The place where I found this great deal? Chez Sam.

I've decided that my cross-training will be lap swimming; something I know quite a bit about, having swum competitively for four years. That, and I can do it for free in the UNH indoor pool. Heh, heh, heh.

In exercise news this weekend, on Saturday I will be walking with my friend Karey from Putnam; and on Tuesday, Joe and I will be doing the Durham "Support the FORT" 5k. Happy Fourth!

Power Bar Vanilla Crisp? Yuck. I liek the crispies but the vanilla has this chalky taste that reminds me of the glop they make you drink when you do X-rays.

Raaaaaaaiiiiiin! Totally blew my plans for gym tonight. Paul had trouble driving home through flooded streets and I was worried but he got in fine, albeit it very late. Tomorrow I will hope for lighter rain, or no rain. Will I have to buy rain workout gear? Ugh.

Yoga instead for tonight.

Thorlo socks just got here by UPS. Yippee!

Predicted thunderstomrs for hte next SEVEN days with temps in the low 90's. ARGH! What's the point of the rain then? to make steam?

I am getting fidgety. Took Sunday and Monday off voluntary, got rained out yesterday -- if it's really bad tonight and we flood again I'm not going to try to get to gym. Am I going to be stuck doing videos? Ugggggggh.

training walk 6/27/2000
Locale: Planet Fitness
Minutes: 45
Mileage: ~2.0
Total Mileage: 79.9

Oh-so-close to eighty miles! In actuality, I probably went over eighty, but as I forgot to look at the odometer on the treadmill, I don't feel comfortable posting that amount. I can post 2 miles, and make that a solid bid. (BattleTech terminology, anyone?)

It was an okay workout. The desk monitor this evening was the blonde chimpie (hey, hey, don't knock me for using that term -- I'm a blonde chimpie myself) who signed me up, and not the brown-haired gentleman who always smiles with his eyes as well as his mouth when wishing me goodnight. The blonde chimpie gets on my nerves a little bit. But oh well. It's only the desk monitor, not like I'm married to the person or anything.

I started my workout with a warmup that started at 2.5MPH and worked its way up to 3.0MPH. Then I started adding some speed.. but my right hamstring started feeling wonky after only six or seven minutes. So it was back down to 2.5 MPH for about 20 minutes. Once some of the tightness and ache went away, I started adding speed again .. 2.7MPH.. 2.9MPH.. I got all the way up to 3.4MPH (!!!), but could only hold it for about a minute. I finished the workout at 3.3MPH.

So the 2.0 miles is a good estimate, since I was playing with the speed most of the time.

It felt just great to see 3.4MPH, as it's the first time I've done it. It felt just horrible to feel that ache in my hamstring, because I don't want to think I'm gonna be hanging out at 2.5MPH until I can see my doctor (which may be when I have health insurance again finally -- in another month!). Planet Fitness offers some great morning classes; yoga on Monday, upper body weight training on Thursday, lower body weight training on Friday. I think that these classes would really help me in the aches and cricks and tightness in my hamstring, if only I could get out of bed at 5:30AM to get to these classes!

I think I have to, though.

I also have to go back to an eating plan, because I think part of the problem is so much weight on this poor frame of mine. But I can do this. I CAN DO THIS. If I'm brave enough to put my name on a list of Disney marathoners, I can certainly eat right and make strengthening my body a priority.

(And, the club offers free chiropractic consultation. I may take them up on that.)

Training Walk 6/24
Guest Walking Buddies: Joe, John, and Kelly
Locale: the coastal walk between Rye and Hampton
Minutes: 1h 45
Mileage: ~4.25
Total Mileage: 77.9

New guest walking buddies, you'll notice! There's a long story that goes along with it, so sit back, grab a cuppa, and continue reading:

In September 1997, just after Joe and I got married, the academic school year began. When we returned to work and classes, we met John and Kelly at the UNH Trekkers' Club. (Yup, a Star Trek club.) We got to know each other over club meetings and events and became pretty good friends. It was through their influence that we moved into their apartment complex in February of 1998.

Around that same time, we got back in touch with a former role-playing friend, who wanted us to join his current Star Wars adventure. We agreed, and were introduced to some more people. Of this new group, we became friendly with another couple. So much so, that when they started having trouble with their landlord in June 1998, they moved into the same apartment complex. We introduced this new couple to John and Kelly, and the six of us had a grand old time for the rest of the summer.

And then the new school year began..

I had decided that I wanted to graduate ASAP -- having been in school for six years already, and going on to a seventh. So I started to work full-time and go to school full-time, and I didn't have time for much socializing. So I didn't call people as often. And when I called John and Kelly, they usually had other plans.. with this other couple. Calls to this other couple were more and more frequently not being returned.

When I finally got my degree in May of 1999, I invited both couples to my graduation and party. From John and Kelly I got a regretful decline -- they were going to another friends' graduation party that same day. But from the other couple .. nothing.

And in July, we made a very fast decision to take jobs an hour south, find an apartment local to the new jobs, and move our whole household. Which we did. And we lost contact with many people -- including John and Kelly. I can't say that we lost contact with this other couple, because we hadn't spoken to them in over six months.

So fast forward to last week. I'm visiting with another friend during the workday, and she mentions that John and Kelly might like to hear from Joe and I. She gives me their phone number.

Saturday, I call. We have a nice chat on the phone, and decide to go to the movies to see "Chicken Run". After the movie, I invite them to go walking with us. They agree, and off we go. Because it was getting later in the day, and our friends weren't as used to walking as Joe and I, we didn't come close to three hours. We didn't come close to two hours. But we had an enjoyable walk -- we talked about what happened, and where we were, and where we are now. And I'm very, very satisfied with the outcome.

Or, I was, until I saw my pod'ner's post here. Dang, lady, 11.5 in 2:15?? I'm really wondering if I'm going to be able to keep up with you! You Go!

Things that worked: the hydrapak. I was so glad to have it. The PowerBar was a good idea, as I was hungry (and I DIDN'T get snackies at the movie theater! YAY!).

Things that bugged me: the fact that I had to walk in my old sneaks because my new walking shoes were still waterlogged from Thursday's jaunt in the downpour! But I didn't have any foot problems with them, so I was glad I still had them instead of tossing them out.

This is great news. But there's still a lot involved before we can find cures for genetic disorders like neurofibromatosis.

You can help.
