Training
10/20
- Focus: Rest
- Actual: 30 min strength training
I
am waaaay too hyper this morning. My office is a mess. I have oodles more NF things
to do but right now getting ready for Halloween and this wedding take top notch
this weekend. I need to see what's up with my scanner and finish the filing and
then sort out my training binder and all this charity info I keep stuffing in
there all crazy. I was so keyed up I just ran through my weight thing in my pajamas.
Didn't even bother to change clothes. I'm all bouncy and raring to go. Oooh, maybe
the car people will call today and tell me the Talon is ready. That would ROCK!
So would pancakes and veggie sausage and OJ...

10/19
Locale: Kitty Tour
Minutes: 40
Mileage: 2.0
2000 mileage:
still uncertain (need to determine that this weekend) Oh, yesterday was bad.The
day itself wasn't too terrible, but the run.. well, the run just fell apart.
I did my usual walking lap to warm up, after some very unsatisfactory stretching
(note to self - leave the car parked out front of the apartment to stretch against).
I started in on the next lap, doing the usual 1 run/3 walk cycle. I managed to
get two good running bursts out of my legs, but on #3 I noticed that I could only
run for a few seconds before my legs forced me into this weird shuffle/waddle.
I tried to compensate by taking an extra two minutes of walking to recover, and
deep-breathing, but it was of no use. After lap 3 I turned the 2-minute timer
off and just ran when I felt like it - those runs lasted between 20 and 40 seconds
each. After four laps, I recognized that going any more put me in on the fast
track to injury which I didn't want to be on, especially with a 5k tomorrow, and
stopped.
I took a look at my food journal, and found the culprit - not enough
food to go on. So I sat down and made a plan for today to succeed at the 5k tomorrow.
Basically, it includes the following:
1. Nutrition: Get in carbs. A sandwich
(probably chicken teriyaki or tuna fish) for lunch, and penne with chicken, broccoli
and parmesan for dinner. A couple of refills on the Brita bottle during the day
today, and a quart of gatorade over the course of the afternoon/evening.
2.
Dressing well. I need to wash my long-sleeved NF t-shirt and my unlined windpants,
and make sure I've got a pair of wicking socks clean.
3. Sleep. I've got to
get up and be out the door by 7AM to be in Derry at around 8. So this means that
I need to get into bed no later than 11 tonight. This shouldn't be problem, because
I'm tired from last night's less-than-adequate amount of sleep. But this DOES
mean that I"m having a quiet evening at home, even if I do so by myself. Ah well
- I'm not into the roleplaying stuff my husband is so interested in. I'll get
some programming done, at least.
Of course, all of this assumes that the twinging
my knee is doing currently stops, else I may find myself asleep in my bed come
9 AM tomorrow.

Yesterday
the lawn people were around and coupled with me cleaning out the closet to get
out the winter sweaters and things for washing, I wound up having a major allergy
fit. Tears, snot, cough -- the works. So I spent my evening on the futon drugged
up watching Paul do his weights and talking to him. I was pretty amused -- he
came home and changed clothes and got right to it, then when he was done he decided
he was hungry and ate and then went to take a nap. I napped too, and then when
I woke up I did my own weight thing. I don't know what pattern he is going to
follow, but I plan to do MWF. It was a good strong workout, and I can feel it
especially in my delts. It took Paul 45 min to do it all, but it took me only
30 to cover the same ground. Probably because I didn't need to be looking up every
move to figure out how to do it -- I already know all of these.
This morning
I woke up at 4:30 AM super hungry. So I ate everything in easy reach: banana,
cup of OJ, two slices whole wheat bread toasted with PB & J, brown rice crisps
with soy milk, and a slice of choc. cake because I was just not happy with the
juice and jam for sweets. Lately I've been fighting HUGE sweet cravings and it's
driving me nuts. This morning I checked out my food log, and found out for the
last couple days I'd been eating less carbs than I am used to. That might explain
this sudden yen for candy and sugary stuff. So today I planned heavy on whole-grain
type carbs and let's see if I chill out.
Since I was up and all hyper,
and sunrise isn't til 7:30 AM, I got in the car and zipped to gym and got on a
cross trainer. Banged out my 3 miles for today, but had a bit of a problem breathing.
I'm clearer than yesterday, but I still had a rough time breathing deep. Since
it was a cool 59 deg F this morning, and the AC was on full blast and some dingy
had the fans on as high as possible it was super ICY at the gym. Colder than outside!
So every ACed breath I took burned in my chest. Didn't much care for that!
But
basically I feel good, but worn out.

Training 10/18
- Focus: 3 mile run
- Actual: 45 - 60
min strength training
Ok, I tried REALLY hard this evening to go out
for the planned workout but the temptation to hang around at home was simply too
much! UPS delivered the Bowflex so Paul put it together while I handed him tools
and watched. Then we spent some time taking turns doing different things with
it. It wasn't a formal strength training routine. It was more "potluck"
with trying different things from the manual that looked interesting and figuring
out what feels right to start out with. We took notes so when we do a formal routine
we will know already how much resistance to tack on for each exercise for ourselves.
At the moment he's topping me out for upper body and I'm topping him out for lower
body. But we all could have guessed that! It feels weird to be doing weights with
Paul. It's never been something we did since he hates the gym so much. This is
going to be interesting!

Ay carumba! I am so glad
I won't have to do the half-marathon with a forty-pound bookbag. I hauled butt
to my CS class this morning, across campus and up three flights of stairs, and
nearly keeled over. Aiee!!

Today I am online,
procrastinating as usual. I decided I would go around the websites and see what
I could find for roadraces that fell into schedule with the half-mary training
we're doing. Praise Murphy, I found one. A road race in Somersworth, which
is right next to Dover. On November 5, a 10k race and 5k run/walk.
I look at
the schedule. Hmm.. I need to do at least five, preferably six miles that weekend.
Fits right in for the 10K! But since they're offering a 5k WALK, I call to make
sure that it's ok if I end up walking some or all of the 10K. I mean, I can do
a 2 walk/2 run on a good day, but you can't make any guarantees.
So I call
the number listed on the website. To make a long story short, they don't want
anyone holding up their awards ceremony, which is why they offer the 5k walk instead
of the 10k walk. Isn't that good enough?
Not if you're training for a walking
half-marathon, dolt!
*sigh* I toss the newly-printed form for that race in
the recycle bin, and head over to Runner's
World to check out THEIR race calendar. And this
is what I find.
It's only a 5k, but:
1. It's this weekend, and this
weekend's long run is at least 3 miles.
2. It says "Walkers Encouraged", which
means that if I have a not-so-hot day I can walk without worrying about holding
people up, but if I feel great and want to run half the thing, I can.
3. It's
in Derry, which means although I'll have a long drive, I might be able to convince
my aunt and cousin to walk with me.
I am excited. I fill out the webform. I
am "encouraged". Rotary Dolt, eat your heart out.

Hmm. I am
required to have a subscription to the New York Times for one of my class. Today
in the health section they discuss weight. "We evolved an active species, and
our appestats, by which we adjust food intake with body needs, seem to function
best when we are active."
"Our gene pool has not changed. Rather, society has
changed. We're designed to move. In a society where it is comfortable to be sedentary,
the genetically susceptible become obese."
Hmmm..

I know I'm
starting to babble. My sincerest apologies.. But I just called Bicycle Bob's,
and asked if he could order me Luna Bars, and if I could use my gift certificate
to pay for them. The answer was yes, and yes! So I now have a box of Lemon Zest
and a box of Chai Tea bars on order.. now I just have to go home and find the
gift certificate, hehe.
Yaay Luna Bars!

My last post today,
I promise! training 10/17
Locale: Kitty tour
Temp: 47°
Minutes: 57
Mileage: 3.0
2000 mileage: somewhere up over 100
I got
home. I changed into my running apparel. I made my gatorade. I went out to the
car and did my stretching. My first "warmup" lap passed in 9:33. I started doing
1 min run/3 min walk intervals, and the remaining laps passed in 9:11, 9:17, 9:21,
9:28, and 9:12. Though I didn't have any sub-9 minute laps, I am very pleased
with the results of my effort - I've not had such consistent split times ever.
There will be time to speed it up once I'm back in the swing.

Once again, an excerpt from my journal,
caffeinated fish:
"Joe?" I say at 8:10 AM, after he returns to bed from feeding the cats.
"Hrm?"
"Did we have any plans for today?" I ask.
"Not that I can remember.. why?"
"Because I'm feeling excited for some reason today, and I can't figure it out.
I know why I'm feeling excited about TOMORROW, and that's because I should be
getting another budget sheet from the Marathon Team; but I'm really excited about
something today, and I can't quite figure out if it's because our new training
starts today, or if it's something else that's equally exciting."
"Well, why
don't you go check it out on the big calendar?" he suggests practically. Instead,
I came to check my e-mail. And there it is, the last message in my inbox:
"Hi,
Adrith. Your workout: Cross-train 30 minutes. Including today, there are 83 days
before the end of your training program."
Bing bing bing. It's the start of
the Great Push. The great push to get everyone to send in their pledge cards,
and the great push to get my arse in gear to do the race on January 7th. We've
got 83 days.
Little Tokyo Townsville, are you ready??
I'm not sure I am,
either. But it's going to be an adventure!

Training 10/15
- Focus: Cross-training for 30 min
- Actual: 60 min biking with Paul
- Distance:
8.5 miles
Today we started the last leg of training -- the 12 week
schedule It's always nice to start new things off with a bang -- literally. Paul
and I were out in the school yard launching off his new rockets for about an hour,
and then we walked home and grabbed drinks, rested for a bit, and then went out
for an hour of biking. It alternated between easy sprints and then harder ones.
He had me chasing him down this big long grassy one and I topped out at 14 MPH
and he was just a hair ahead of me at 15 MPH. My bike odometer is really neat,
but we have to figure out how to keep it from wobbling,. My handlebars are thinner
than the girth of the meter so it wibbles around while I am biking. That wouldn't
be so bad if it weren't wireless, but because it is wireless, it needs to stay
put so it can sense the other parts down on my front tire. Otherwise it will be
out of range and not pick up.
I love the cool weather. I'm definitely in
better spirits for this round. The tail of the summer stuff was just witchy!
