Wow. After a few weeks of being ill,
I just went out and did a wog. I did 1 mile of 2/2 run/walk, in 23° plus
wind. Any more than that and I felt I risked making myself sicker.. and while
I didn't want to wog on a treadmill, I didn't want to get sick either.
It felt
really good. Funny, I had two human (plus dog) encounters while I was doing the
Kitty tour; the guy with the dog was the same guy I'd encountered running over
the late spring and early fall, and he gave me an encouraging smile. I ran by
a moderately overweight woman who gave me a dirty look when I smiled at her, as
if I had no right to be running in this horrendously overweight body I own.
I just kept running..

Today (Sunday) was the 5K we did for Arthritis. It was very laid back
and casual, not as many people as the Mayfaire one, but a nice course -- three
times around a lakeside trail in the park. The side events were dancing and singing
and Santa Claus pictures and basically holiday themed festivities. The kids were
having a good time with the man-made snow. Before the race we had early dinner
at a cafe and I had an open face grilled veggie sandwich with a salad. Sat well
with me. Then we watched some of the dancing.
I wore spandex shorts under
my track pants, my short-sleeve NF T-Shirt, and then the NF sweatshirt over it.
It was 50 deg. out, but with a lot of wind so at first I was cold but once I got
started the sweatshirt was just too hot. Paul wore a long-sleeve T-shirt, then
his short-sleeve Jingle Bell Race T-shirt from his good bag over it, and then
a flannel long-sleeve button shirt. He ditched the flannel one and tied it around
his waist when he got hot. Probably at Disney I could get by with my long sleeve
shirt and the singlet. I know it will be cool but it will only get hotter as the
day wears on.
I couldn't clean my hydrapak tube so I didn't bring it. I
drank a lot of water with dinner, used the restroom, and then just picked up a
water bottle to carry with me and took sips whenever I needed it. Remembered the
lip balm too. We took off at 6:15 PM and for the first 10-15 min I had those annoying
calf pains but after that I was fine. (Basically before Disney I need to have
walked at least 15 min to make sure I am loose.)
Sunset was at 5 PM, so
the course was lit with candles in paper bags. He had asked me if I wanted to
jog it but I said no because I did not want to fall in the dark. That's the last
thing I'd need at this point -- some kind of injury! So the first lap around we
just walked fast. Paul, the long-legged, was always a step ahead of me but it
was ok. We chatted, and after I got familiar with the course we started playing
fartlek games. One of us would point out some visual cue in the distance and we'd
jog to it and then walk for a bit and pick some other thing to jog to.
We
came in 10 min faster than our last race -- 38 min and change. I'm pleased, because
on a cross trainer sans pounding I can do it at around 30-33 min. so it's not
as bad a discrepancy between that and the street as I thought I would have.
Our pace at this race was a little over 12 minutes per mile. I have to ask Adrith
what her mile pace times are looking like in her training so we can figure out
what our strategy will be for Disney. If you go by what we put on our registrations
forms, it's 16 min miles. I think we ought to go for a quick walk the night she
flies in to see how we pace each other.
At any rate, had a good time today.
After the race, Paul and I went mini golfing to celebrate our new time. I beat
him by 10 strokes. Muahaha.

Today I was supposed to do 9 miles, but I had to quit at 7 miles. It wasn't that
I couldn't do it mentally or physically, it was that my stomach growling was driving
me nuts! Before I left I ate a large pita sandwich with lots of hummus, tomato,
lettuce, etc and juice, but I guess it wasn't enough so I started getting hungry
at mile 7 and it was simply too distracting. I should have remembered to bring
a box of raisins or something. :P On the bright side, it felt good, I felt
fine, and I was pretty pleased with my pace. I get it at 58-60 RPM the whole time
for an average pace of 10 min, 25 sec per mile. My new sneaks were ok, except
I laced the left shoe a bit too tight and I had to stop to fix it. I drank water
every 10 minutes, and I was in a good mood, so it was a nice workout. NEXT Saturday
I need to double check that I have a snack, and try to eat more before I go. I
also want to do it on a trail so Paul has to get up and not sleep in.
Did
weights 3x this week so that was good too. Now if I could only get my eating back
on schedule!
