Week
One: And They're Off!
Not
far into our first week of training, it occurred to us where we would have to
be physically in order to complete this marathon in the time allotted -- a sixteen-minute
mile minimum. Once that number was brought out into the open, we had a much clearer
picture of how far our bodies had to progress to get to that magic number. Other
things started occurring to us, too. Like how seven hours is a long time to be
doing any one activity in a concentrated effort. Were we going to be carrying
around sunscreen to slather on every hour or two? Was a water stop every mile
going to be enough? This brought up some portability issues. What did we need
to carry with us on race day?
"I
hate that term [fanny pack]. My fanny is big enough, thanks, without adding an
additional lump to it." - Adrith
Almost
from the very start we kept track of our vital statistics. At the end of training
week one, we have each logged approximately 8.5 miles. From this point on, each
training day is marked with mileage and other information of importance to each
of us. We learned a lot about each other and ourselves this week -- like our need
for sunscreen and appropriate training clothes and gear. These lessons will stay
with us for a long time ahead.
