Week
Eight: Feeling Wonky
Adrith
made a good observation this week that pretty summarized it all:
John Bingham writes in The Courage
to Start: "Once you've overcome the momentum of your own inactivity, the improvements
are much more incremental and there are ups and downs. You begin to have good
days and bad days. In time you come to accept these fluctuations as natural."
Ugh, this is natural?" Adrith
Nothing
seemed to go right with anything. Not the weather, not our clothes, not the workouts,
nothing! We were frustrated and cranky. Florida fires caused by drought made Cat/Astrophe's
allergies horrible which in turn made going outside to train impossible. Adrith
struggled with bad leg muscle pains that also put her on the sidelines. Smaller
problems that also made things difficult to bear ranged from from inner thigh
chafing to socks causing blsiters. There were also major worries like feeling
intimidated by the new Disney
Course map.
"Oh,
god! The course map is up on the Disney site!" Cat/Astrophe
"As
some of the Disney Deads commented, it doesn't look much different than last year.
But it DOES bring the reality of this marathon home, doesn't it? I'm worried that
I'm going to get stuck at the 21-minute mile. I'm worried that I'm not going to
be able to finish the marathon and that I may not even have it in me to finish
the half." Adrith
We
took comfort in the small, bright spots whenever they turned up.
"I think I've decided on a
water hydration system. I'm going to go with the Blackburn Creekflow HydraPak.
It's not as expensive in cycling shops up here as the CamelBak products; their
water saks have a great opening for easy cleaning; and I think I can afford to
pick one up this weekend. Neato burrito." Adrith
"Do
have some good news -- got a progress report sheet and I'm almost at halfway!
$475! Yeah! I'm eager to get that $1000 out of the way so I can jump into helping
Adrith with hers. I want to meet her, I want to race, I want to DO this!"
