February 1, 2001 Training today: 1.55 miles in 30 minutes.
2:00/1:45/2:00 tonight, but it was incredibly hard. I don't know if it was the
fact that I wasn't adequately hydrated (which was true), or the fact that I'd
been eating the low-octane fuel instead of the high-octane fuel (which was also
true), but my heartrate at five minutes' cooldown was in the 160's instead of
the 150's again. The little voice came out again too. The little voice that
kept telling me "YOU GOTTA DO THIS" at Disney talked to me tonight. "COME ON,
ANOTHER FORTY-FIVE SECONDS. COME ON, ANOTHER THIRTY SECONDS. YOU GOTTA DO THIS."
We'll see tomorrow whether I was wise to listen to it or not. If I can walk tomorrow,
then I'll thank my little voice. If not.. it and I will have to have a serious
chat. More healthy food and less junk food and more water between now and Saturday
(my next wog date), and we'll see if 2:00/1:45/2:00 is any easier. If it is, we'll
know it was the fuel quality. If it isn't, I'll have found yet another speed bump
on my way to 30 minutes of running. posted by Adrith 11:35

January 31, 2001
Training yesterday: 1.54 miles in 30 minutes. I managed to run the 1:45/1:45/2:00
pattern I'd hoped for yesterday, and I think if I'd pushed myself a little harder
I would have run even more. Baby steps, though! Don't want to get injured! What
did frustrate me was that even with the extra fifteen seconds of wogging it didn't
bump my mileage up at all. I was on a different treadmill than usual (the one
I usually use was reading in METRIC rather than Imperial units) so I had to use
a different machine. Maybe that accounts for the missing mileage.. It was funny
- because the roads are so icy up here, I had a very quiet drive to the gym, and
when I got there, was one of about ten people exercising. I had a feeling that
I was going to have a good wog when I saw that. The other positive thing is
that two to three minutes into my cooldown, I checked my heartrate as I usually
do. Instead of hovering between 160 and 165 as it did this weekend, my heartrate
was bouncing between 150 and 155. I'm improving! I'm improving! Wheeee!!! On
a technical aside - I tried to log into blogger from home to update this log -
and when I logged in, it gave me the option of starting a new blog or logging
out. I think blogger's new servers are the issue - I'm going to hunt someone down
and make them give me an explanation - and more importantly, FIX IT, so that I
can update from home! posted by Adrith 8:10 AM
January 30, 2001 I was interviewed by New Hampshire
Public Television about neurofibromatosis, training for the race and fundraising!
They came by my house on Martin Luther King day, and we had a nice chat. Rather,
as nice of a chat as you can have with a tv camera stuck in your face. Here's
the show
my interview was aired on. I got matched up with the daycare crisis - whoopee..
Press is press though. I can't complain (too loudly). posted by Adrith 2:04 PM
January 29, 2001 A rest day, and not a moment too soon
either. My body is in open rebellion for going to the gym twice this weekend;
my arm hurts, my legs are sore, and I just generally feel like I'm about to fall
apart. I think that if I can get away from work early, I'll go home and soak
in the bathtub. And plan the party I want to throw when I reach the ability to
do 1.6 miles in 30 minutes. posted by Adrith 10:47 AM
I'm back! I had a great time! We went to Withlacoochee State
Forest for the weekend to bike on the rails-to-trails and on the off-road bike
paths. It was sooo much fun! We knows on the paved trail the first day we went
for 32 miles, but the next day on the off-road trails Paul broke his odometer
wire when he got snagged by some branch so we have no idea how far we went. Croom
has 55 miles total of off-road bike paths. Obviously we didn't do them all! But
we did do a good bit of the blue loop before hunger drove us out of the woods
and into the car in search of food. We stayed at a little cottage B&B in
Floral City that was a really nice place to stay. Shadowbright was very cozy and
serene. I'd love to go back. Maybe next time instead of two bike days, we'll bring
the blades and skate one day and antique the other. posted by Cat "Astrophe" 12:25 PM
January 28, 2001 Training today: 1.54 miles in 30 minutes.
I thought that because I had gone to the gym just yesterday, I could again start
working on lengthening my jogging sprints. I started out with the usual warm-up
(and not the slower warmup from yesterday) - as a result, I didn't have the energy
to increase my jogging sprints. The first one, at 1:45, was okay - but could only
do 1:30 for my second, as my calves were starting to hurt. I managed to get 2:00
out of my third, which gives me exactly the same jogging sprints I did yesterday,
just out of order. Note to self: you can only make one improvement at a time.
(Notice with just the return to the usual warm-up, I eked out an extra hundredth
of a mile.) I think that I'm going to make an edit to my training plan. When
I finally manage, in the next couple of weeks or so, to get to 2 minutes jog/2
minutes walk, I'm going to train there until I notice it getting easier. Whether
I spend two weeks or a month at 2/2, I think it will give me a much stronger foundation
to go on than if I just powered straight through to 30 minutes straight jogging.
(Less chance of injury to be sure!) I hope Cat's having a good time on her
bike trip.. posted by Adrith 10:29 AM
