February 15, 2001 Been talking to Adrith about the game
plan for this year's training. We've got different goals, and later in the year
a new training partner -- Paul. We laso have to raise a little more for minimums
this year than we did last year. Adrith's goal is to complete the full marathon
event by walk/jog combo. My goal is to run the half. Paul's goal is to run the
half but he runs faster. So probably we will all start together at the same corral,
but then split off into doing our own PR's and meet up at the end. Paul won't
train until October -- for him 3 mos will be enough. Plus that's when work eases
up and he can devote the time to training. He plans to play it by ear for now.
Adrith has already been training and she's keeping it up well. I was concentratining
on biking for my trip, and then I got sick so I've been out for a little bit.
After e-mailing back and forth with health notes and fine tuning, I told Adrith
I'd follow her lead and train like I'm going to the the full even though I'm running
the half. At least up until October when Paul being thrown into the mix will call
for reorganization. So Monday Adrith and I are going to start the schedule from
Ian MacNeill's The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13 Week Walk/Run
Program I'm excited but a little nervous. I started this schedule before and
I never got past a 90 sec jogging sprint within the walking intervals. We're starting
back at 30 sec jog sprint, but it increases over the 13 weeks to phase out the
walking and leave you ready to run a 10K. I also have issues to deal with --
mainly medical care. I have to see an allergist, endocrinologist, podiatrist,
and dietitian. Karen's upped her fees to $50 a session, so with both Paul and
I see her as our dietitian that's something to work into the budget. I need to
see an allergist and get put on regular meds or the shots again because I can't
run if I can't breathe right. I have to see the endo because I'm not losing weight,
my periods are screwy, my skin is getting weird, my temps are too low, and it
all points to a thyroid problem. My mom used to have thyroid issues -- I prolly
have inherited it from her. I can't see how running with a bizarre metabolism
will be a good thing. Last, I need to see a foot person for my feet. I underpronate
and my ankle, while grealty improved, still makes me nervous. I don't want to
learn to run with funky feet biomechanics. I may need custom orthotics. Maybe
physical therapy. Who knows? The point is that I have a mess of medical bills
in my future, and I need my insurance junk sorted out so I can maybe afford to
pay for it all! posted by Cat "Astrophe" 1:58 PM
February 12, 2001 Training today: 1.55 miles in 30 minutes.
I did my usual warmup and three 2-minute jog sprints. I knew yesterday, after
that first sprint that felt just short of heavenly, that it was probably a fluke
- different treadmill, a week of rest, etcetera, etcetera. Well, I was right.
The first sprint tonight felt just a little harder than the first sprint last
night - but the second and third sprint felt awful. I also had a knee brace
to deal with. When I got out of work this afternoon, I was energized and motivated
and READY to go to the gym and kick butt and take names. I then went to to the
grocery store, went home, and went to the grocery store AGAIN because I'd unwittingly
left behind all of the fixings for our lunches this week. *smack of head against
keyboard* So, by the time I got home a second time, I was tired, I was upset,
I felt like a complete idiot.. and my knee had started to ache. But there was
still part of me that kept saying "..you need to go to the gym.." (Thank goodness
for the little voice that tells me to keep going .. because otherwise I would
have stopped a long time ago.) So I went, wearing my Ace brace on my knee,
and hopes that it wouldn't affect my workout. I think it did - my left ankle is
a little sore and I think it's because I had to compensate for the brace on my
right knee. Praise Murphy, tomorrow is a rest day.. posted

Training today: 1.54 miles in 30 minutes. That particular number is NOT indicative
of the quality of my run today; even though I hadn't wogged in a week, the first
two-minute jog went right by with minimal tightness, the second was only slightly
harder than the first, and the third was about as hard as the first jog was in
my last wogging session. Yes! Six minutes of wogging! And it wasn't that hard!
You know what this means NOW, of course. I'll go to the gym again and repeat
the 2/2/2 session, and if it feels as good as tonight's did, I'll take the next
step into Level 2 of my wogging program - dropping the 10-minute warmup and cooldown
to 8 minutes each, and working up to 4-minute running segments This means I'll
start out with four 2-minute running segments, and work up to three 4-minute running
segments (at a 4/1 ratio). If it took me two good weeks of wogging to get up to
2/2, I can only imagine how long it's going to take to get up to 4/1. Eeep! Just
thinking about it is causing a small freakout. Can't have that! If nothing else,
I've got to remember that plenty of people run whole marathons at 2/2 - and if
that's the best I ever work up to, it won't be the end of the world. I do, however,
want to get better - I want to run that whole 5k. posted by
