The prednisone (allergy med) tastes very acrid, but 2 pills
later and I'm using 2 nostrils! Still kind drippy, but breathing through both
nostrils is a major breakthrough for me. I can't remember the last time I did
that! I flipped my plans and did the walk this morning. Later I plan to do weights
for my VR fitness date with Adrith. I had to send a fax, and then piddly errands
like the bank, mail, etc. I misjudged my timing thinking I'd get it all done before
lunch. I planned to eat a pita tomato and hummus sandwich at home with carrot-raisin
salad but I was starving and I didn't want to go home only to come back to the
mall area to workout. Instead I had hummus and lavosh chips for a snack at the
food court. Pretty close to plan and happily $3 because I had no money other than
car change scrounge. After I ate I set my timer for 30 minutes and just started
walking. I had calf cramps for the first 15 min. as usual. I did two laps and
change by the time my watch went off. Then I came home to see my sportbrain notes
and I got a nice surprise -- each lap of the mall indoor perimeter is one mile,
and I'd covered 2.2 miles. A little over 4 MPH per hour for pace. I thought I
was going to be really bad after not having a good cardio session in so long.
Best of all, the mall AC was on, beautiful, and nothing was dripping from the
ceiling! Granted, no wogging allowed in mall corridors, but for plain walking
workouts it's better than my stinky ol' gym!

This weekend's long walk was supposed
to be 5 miles; I am guessing it to be between 3.5 and 4 miles (it sure wasn't
what the Sportbrain said it was). Karey and I went down to Hampton to walk by
the sea, thinking it would be cooler - it WAS cooler, but the humidity just didn't
help the cause any. We parked our cars on a side street, then walked down by the
sea - went 25 minutes one way, turned around, walked 25 minutes back to near where
our cars were.. took a short break for necessaries, then walked about another
20 minutes before actually calling it quits.
A little disappointed that
I didn't get the 5 miles in.. but with the craziness of a wedding and parties
to go to, I'm just thankful I didn't bail completely.

Walking
at the gym - got there at about 9:30 or so, and did my 2 miles there. I started
out with 10 minutes at 2.5 miles per hour to get warmed up.. spent 5 minutes incrementing
up to 3.0 MPH.. and then did a full 29 minutes at 3.0 MPH. I haven't done that
in a while .. I've been starting at 2.5, working up to 3, dropping down to 2.5
or 2.8 when I'm tired, jacking it back up after a little bit, dropping it again..
nothing consistent.
This was one solid block of effort, and I feel plastered
having done it. Blah! Hopefully it will get better SOON. I managed to get through
it by watching the gym TV.. but I didn't bring the walkman with radio capability,
so I had to watch the movie (Cliffhanger) by closed-captioning. I gotta remember
the radio next time!

Back from gym. 2 miles in
41 and change tonight, feel just about as tired as I did last night, which I guess
is progress. :) I actually shortened my lead-in time from 10 minutes last night
to 5 minutes, which accounts for the three or so minutes saved. Hopefully, I won't
feel half-dead tomorrow because of it.
I remembered to bring the walkman
that has radio capability, and watched ER. Here's my observations:
1. Not
all the ceiling fans on the upper deck are equal. I was closer to the left end
tonight, and though I was RIGHT UNDER the fan, I was not kept as cool as when
I hang out under the middle fan.
2. Watching TV while treadmilling is a
mixed blessing. I mean, while the program is on, whole minutes go by without me
having to think too much about how my feet are feeling, or how tired I am. But
when those commercials come on - I felt the sore spot on my foot where I scratched
and opened a blister.. I felt the sweat dripping down my neck.. I felt the not-so-cool
air not being really refreshing in my lungs. Every time there was a commercial
break I had to make a concerted effort to not stop now, and see the whole workout
through. Thankfully, I did so, and finished well.
Because I was there so
late, my gym cutie was working when I left - but he was busy signing some people
up, so I didn't get my "goodnight". I stopped at the door and helped myself to
one of the grape-flavoured candies (made by Tootsie, in a similar vein to the
Tootsie Roll) for a little happy-kick instead.
I know that one little grape
candy won't kill me.. but I'd rather have had the "goodnight", you know?
